Bugando Medical Centre is a well known hospital in the town of Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria in the north of Tanzania. It was built in the 1960s and serves as a referral hospital for a population of over 8 million people living in the Lake Zone .
Bugando Medical Centre has become an important referral centre for fistula patients from all over Tanzania with an average of 200 surgical repairs being carried out every year. Dr. Raassen visited the Bugando Medical Centre to treat a series of women with extremely complicated fistula and to continue the training of the Tanzanian fistula specialists working there.
During this camp, 20 women were examined and 15 were operated upon. 2 women received continuous catheter treatment.
