WAHA International participates in press conference on fistula in Dakar

Dr. Sinan Khaddaj, WAHA International’s secretary general participated in a press conference held in Dakar on the 6th of December.

 

The other participants included Gillian Slinger, coordinator of the Campaign to End Fistula, UNFPA regional representatives and Pr Serigne Gueye, expert fistula surgeon and one of WAHA’s key collaborators.
Dr. Sinan talked about the role of NGOs in eliminating obstetric fistula, which included strengthening local health structures, carrying out community outreach activities and raising awareness on the issue in the media.
“NGOs are widely present on the ground today, participating in a variety of initiatives related to maternal health” said Sinan. “It is crucial that they do not create parallel systems but help to strengthen local health structures”.
Some of the key actions NGOs can reinforce include community outreach for patient identification and referral, supporting with the training of surgeons and accompanying social reintegration of women.
Around 30 journalists attended the press conference which aimed to raise awareness on the Campaign to End Fistula, as well as strategies to fight fistula and future perspectives on the issue.
